Warm Thoughts

As we enjoy the last days of September and with October just around the corner, I look forward to the crisp and chilly days ahead.

I now have our little cottage spruced up for fall.  Our front door shares a warm welcome.

Our front porch has a few touches of fall.

The inside is spruced up.  I have kept my sprucing up simple.

As the weather gets cooler and the days grow shorter, we will visit the pumpkin patch, the cider mill and the many fall festivities going on in our neck of the woods.  I am sure that we will find fall touches to add to our already spruced up cottage while out and about.  My thoughts turn to simple ways to warm our hearts and our home by creating homemade, heartmade, homespun charm.

Our quilt on our bed will be cosy for the fall season.  I love when the time comes to change the crisp cotton bedding for the warm and cosy fleece and flannel bedding.

I have thought how sending pretty mail through the post office has gone by the wayside as we use our computer to communicate with those who are special to us.  So, I have been and want to continue to send letters, cards and notes to family and friends.  It is heartwarming to have something pretty in our mailbox.

With Thanksgiving and Christmas soon to be here, this is a good time to begin planning and preparing for those special times.  I love making homemade gift tags and using brown kraft paper to wrap gifts for our loved ones and our friends.  I also love using raffia, bakers twine or yarn to put a finishing touch to our gifts.  I love the homespun look as they lie under our rustic Christmas tree in the months ahead.

It is nice to take time to make handmade gifts.  I find that this is a good time to plan and prepare for those gifts that we want to make for family and friends.

I have a little old fashioned cupboard in my laundry room.  It looks like a little fabric shop filled with all sorts of fabric, how to books for quilting, crochet, knitting, embroidery and so much more.  I love looking through it all, but seem to put off doing anything with it.  I have decided that it is time to use from my own little stash to make handmade items for our home as well as little gifts to give to others.  There is no better time than now to begin a little project.

Fall is when I love cooking and baking in my old fashioned kitchen.  I do both from scratch and by using my old fashioned kitchen gadgets, vintage bowls and vintage baking dishes, make those comfort foods taste good and look pretty.  Oh my, it makes our little cottage smell so good.

Also, when the weather turns cooler, it is nice to prepare healthy treats to enjoy with our cup of coffee.  I want to go through my cookbooks and stash of recipes to make good for us treats.  I also find that this is the time of the year when I like to put our home in order by clearing out the "stuff" that we no longer use or need.  I like for everything in our home to have its own space.  It helps to keep our cottage tidy and to make good use of the space that we do have.

Most of all this is a wonderful time to be with family and friends, to enjoy one another and deepen our relationships and to make sweet memories.  I will be doing a bit of fluffin' and featherin'  and piddlin' and putterin' around our little cottage as I cherish each moment of the fall season.

Fall Blessings

Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all.
~ Stanley Horowitz ~

Fall is my favorite season.  I am listing a few reasons why I love fall.

Praising God for creating such a beautiful outside setting.

Cool Crisp weather ... as it is time to bring out the warm flannel and fleece bedding.

Fall scented candles add such a lovely touch to our little cottage.

Enjoying fall festivals, visiting the cider mill and visiting the pumpkin patch.

Sitting by a cosy crackling fire to keep warm.

Sitting and sipping a warm cup of spiced apple cider to celebrate the season.

Fluffin' and featherin' our little cottage to make it warm and cosy.

Working on a few fall projects.

Enjoying fall foods ... homemade chili and cornbread, homemade soups and homemade bread, all things made with pumpkin, as well as so many other comfort foods.

I could list so many things that I love about fall.

I was browsing through some of our fall pictures ... some from days gone by and some from now to share with you.

Wishing you all a most wonderful fall season as we enjoy the pleasant days, chilly mornings and brisk cool evenings.  This week felt more like summer time for us here in our little corner of Kansas.  I am sure that fall like weather is just around the corner.

Our Day Trip

We enjoyed a day trip to a few of our favorite places.

We left home early ... our little cooler filled with goodies, our basket filled with a few snacks and a tank full of gasoline.

We went to Greenwood MO ... a quaint little town that is known for their antique shops, specialty shops and a charming tea room.

We also enjoyed meandering through the countryside to get to Cockrell Mercantile.  This little village takes you back to a slower pace and a quieter time.

Cockrell Mercantile is a charming country village filled with cookware, bakeware, dinnerware, food items, baking supplies, lots of gift ideas, home decor, gardening, cookbooks, linens, aprons, candles, cast iron and oh, so much more.  The nooks and crannies of each little cottage are filled to the brim.

It is a place to allow lots of time to browse, not a quick in and out shopping trip.  You want plenty of time to soak it all in and to visit each little cottage of goodies.

The cottages have little walking paths with outdoor seating should you want to relax and take in the sweet atmosphere.  It is a natural, peaceful place where birdsong is abundant as you either relax on one of the benches or walk from shop to shop.

We were there when they first opened for the day.  So it was very quiet and we could go from cottage to cottage without much activity.  It was so pleasant to shop without a crowd.  As the day went by, it became much busier.

They offer complimentary coffee or tea to sip as you wander to and fro.  It is such a warm and friendly atmosphere.

My kind of place.

I am sharing a few pictures from Cockrell Mercantile.

When we left there we enjoyed dinner at Golden Corral.  Our dinner was very good.  When we were finished with our dinner, we decided to browse through a few more antique shops and then we headed home.  It was a full day.  We even found a few little treasures to bring home with us.

I hope that you have enjoyed our little day trip.

Homespun Cottage

I am sharing my thoughts of what HOMESPUN COTTAGE means to me and why I chose HOMESPUN COTTAGE for my little space.

Some of my thoughts shared here, we use in our little cottage, others are what would make our cottage feel more homespun.

To me homespun means simple living, it is about being humble, speaking kind words, preparing and eating simple food and being kindhearted.

Homemade, handmade, heartmade comes to mind when I think of homespun.

Homespun is from scratch baking and cooking with simple ingredients.

Homespun brings to mind quiet homey days and warm and cosy evenings in our little cottage.

Homespun brings thoughts of sweet pleasures and simple blessings, of making handmade treasures, little patchwork or quilted pieces, pretty soft cotton fabric, a coffee mug or a tea cup that fits perfectly in my hand, a good book, candle lite, a little kitchen garden, a few pretty flowers and herbs, a warm and cosy fleece throw and so much more.

Homespun is a word that warms my heart.  Homespun is peace, love and being content with what we have.  Homespun is slow and gentle living and being thankful for each moment.

A cottage to me is a small single story home.  To me the word cottage means a small old fashioned house.  A cottage is modest, comfy and cosy.  A cottage tends to be humble and full of heart.  Comfy, casual and personal is the way we love to live.  I love having a container filled with old fashioned cut flowers from our garden on our kitchen table.  A gentle feel of light colors, soft cotton fabrics, mismatched furnishings speak cottage to me.  Cottage colors feel as soft and clean as bedding fresh from the clothesline.  I think cream, layered in soft colors creates a natural warm and cosy cottage.

Fabrics make for cottage style:  pretty florals, striped ticking, gingham and cotton eyelet lace.  Natural materials such as cotton, linen and burlap create the cottage look and feel.  Using vintage fabrics, vintage hankies, tea towels, flour sacks and aprons lend warmth and charm to our cottage.  Curtains are kept simple and homey.  I like the more rustic flooring for our home.  My choice when using rugs would be simple and natural.

My thoughts on cottage kitchens would be to have open shelving instead of all of the doored cupboards.  I do love the little old fashioned stand alone cupboards.  I love the look of stacked dinnerware, canisters of dry goods, mason jars and baskets filled with good foods.  I also love gathered pretty fabric to hang over a lower cupboard below the kitchen sink.

Open shelves need to be kept organized, clutter free, neat and tidy.  I tend to use a basic cream color for my dinnerware.  I love old fashioned glassware and vintage bakeware.  I do have a set of winter dishes that I love.  They are not old, but look vintage.

As I mentioned above, some of these we use in our little cottage, some I dream of and think that they would add warmth and charm to our little cottage.

FAITH, FAMILY and FRIENDS are what mean the very most.

September Blessings

With the fall season just around the corner, my thoughts turn to sprucin' up our little cottage.

Our days are still summer like, but our mornings and evenings feel like there is a touch of fall in the air.  I will slowly begin adding touches of fall to our cottage.  Our front door is first with a simple touch to welcome those who come to visit.

I will then begin to add little fall touches to our front porch.  I love having a small mum on our little round table.  We will add a touch of fall to our rustic weathered barn wood cupboard.  It is the perfect space to spruce up for all four seasons.

I will begin fluffin' and featherin' the inside of our little cottage as the days go by, keeping it simple.

Fall is my very favorite season.  I love everything about fall.  We especially love our morning cups of coffee on our front porch.  That little nip in the air makes for a quiet and cosy morning.

Such a sweet way to begin our day.

I love puttering in my cosy old fashioned kitchen putting together, from scratch, all of our favorite comfort foods.  It is always nice to have the warmth and the delicious smells coming from the stove top and the oven as the days become shorter and when there is a chill in the air.

Wishing you all a warm and cosy September as you fluff and feather your little nest.
